The Reserve is approximately 58 hectares square and is one of the largest patches of native remnant vegetation in a larger area in the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges in Latrobe Valley.

The main entrance to the Reserve is located on Coalville Road.

Visitors have access to two carparks, and there is a covered seating area, bins, a map of the Reserve and some interesting information about the local plants and animals.

The reserve offers a number of walking trails, ranging from 700m to approximately 5km as well as a well-defined path, boardwalks and viewing platforms for the dam in the wetlands area. A rotunda is set up on the northern side of the dam, just adjacent to the main entrance.
